About the Project Synergy Sansthan

About the project

Harda district in Madhya Pradesh is home to over 50 indigenous tribes, many of whom continue to face daily struggles for survival due to the denial of basic human rights and equal opportunities. The health of women and children in these communities is especially at risk, with high rates of malnutrition and anemia further worsening their condition. Food scarcity, poor sanitation, and limited access to quality healthcare have created a crisis situation, leading to alarmingly high rates of child and maternal mortality.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project Synergy Sansthan is dedicated to improving healthcare access and providing nutritional support to women and children across 10 villages in Harda district. Key activities under the project include identifying and registering pregnant and lactating women at Anganwadi Centers, promoting institutional deliveries, and ensuring nutrition and immunization support for newborns and mothers. The project also conducts regular awareness sessions on hygiene and sanitation.

Another important focus area is the formation of Mothers’ Groups, Children’s Collectives, and Adolescents’ Collectives to raise awareness about maternal and child mortality, while also addressing critical issues like malnutrition and anemia.

The nightingale of Harda

In the forested villages of Harda district in Madhya Pradesh, access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge. Limited transportation and a shortage of healthcare workers have severely impacted the well-being of women and children in these remote communities. One of the major hurdles was the retention of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), as those assigned were often unfamiliar with local customs and language, leading to a cultural disconnect.

This absence created a critical gap in the availability of healthcare services for pregnant and lactating women, especially in accessing essential Ante Natal Care (ANC) and Post Natal Care (PNC). Newborns were also affected, as the lack of regular ANMs meant they were missing out on timely vaccinations provided through primary healthcare centers.

When the community raised these concerns with CRY America’s project team, they immediately intervened. The team approached the Block Medical Officer (BMO) and submitted a formal letter, urging the immediate recruitment of an ANM for the area. To ensure the retention of the new recruit, the team also provided key suggestions including the recognition of efforts by ANM, and offering specialized training in the local language and cultural practices to promote inclusivity and integration into the community.

After consistent follow-ups, the BMO responded to the appeal, and a new ANM was appointed. The project team played a key role in her orientation, educating her on the community’s health and nutrition needs. Equipped with training and an understanding of local customs, the ANM quickly integrated into the community. She now participates enthusiastically in Village Health and Nutrition Day (VHND) activities, ensuring regular immunization drives and ANC/PNC check-ups.

Her inclusive approach and dedication have created a positive impact in the lives of 678 families, including 232 pregnant women and 121 lactating mothers.
