The Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Campaign Story

About the project

Project BGCA creates safe and nurturing spaces where young people can learn, grow, and discover their potential. With more than 5,500 clubs across cities, rural communities, public housing, native lands, schools, and even U.S. military bases, it reaches over 4 million children and teens each year. Here, they receive academic support, career and life-skills training, opportunities in arts and sports, as well as the healthcare and emotional support they need to feel confident and cared for.

Making a difference

The project works to create safe and supportive environments, increase access to healthy meals and snacks, and offer health and wellness programs that help young children build strong habits early in life. These efforts lay the foundation for lifelong well-being. Key interventions include promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening academic success through learning projects, tutoring, science experiments, book clubs, recreation, and sports, and preparing young people for the future with vocational training, STEM education, and other workforce-readiness skills.

The way forward

● Serve 6 million youth annually, reaching 1 in 10 young people in the U.S.
● Support 1 million youth daily, increasing daily participation 2.5 times.
● Engage 1 million teens, including 550,000 new teens, in programs that help them grow, lead, and plan for their future.
● Ensure 100% of clubs have certified, trauma-informed trainers delivering critical life and workforce readiness programs.
● Expand to over 6,500 club sites, equivalent to more than two Clubs in every U.S. county.
● Offer 100 workforce development programs that provide industry-specific skill training and paid, work-based learning opportunities for young adults.
● Increase club membership by 72%, reaching 2 million youth.
● Grow teen membership by 89%, reaching 600,000 teens.
● Serve 500,000 youth daily, a 55% increase in daily participation.

Empowering beyond the classrooms

Adam’s work behind the grades

When Adam’s 8th grade report card showed failing grades in 4 subjects, he began losing interest in school. Classes felt overwhelming, and completing assignments became a struggle.

That’s when CRY America’s Project BGCA team stepped in. The staff listened to Adam, not just about his grades, but about how he felt, his frustrations, and the curiosity he still carried. They noticed the pride he had shown while presenting his “immortal jellyfish” science project and saw the potential in him.

Adam began meeting with the team every day after school. They worked on homework, set achievable goals, and tracked progress. Gradually, he improved his grades, turning failing marks (F’s) into passing (C’s) and later into above-average (B’s). The team’s belief in Adam helped him start believing in himself.

Weeks later, Adam walked in with his new report card, beaming. Three B’s reflected the progress he had made through consistent effort and support. The celebration wasn’t just for the grades, but for Adam’s growth and determination.

Today, Adam continues to work hard in school. With the guidance and encouragement of the project team, he’s building the skills and confidence to succeed academically and beyond.
