Project Comprehensive Health and Rural Development Society (CHARDS)

Campaign Story

About the project

In the Champaran district the existing health care facility is in dilapidated condition. The main barrier of accessibility is distance from the village, lack of medicines and non-availability of doctors. Due to inaccessibility of health services, the burden of home delivery is still prevalent. Maternal health and nutrition, as well as adolescent nutrition have important consequences for intergenerational transmission of malnutrition.

Making a difference

CRY America Project CHARDS has been working towards improved access to quality primary health care in 20 villages. The key activities of the project are sensitizing the community on various mother and child health issues, exploring alternatives for ensuring education of the children, and capacity building of adolescent and adolescent resource centers.

The way forward

● Capacity building of adolescent groups on modules focusing on health, nutrition, menstrual health and CRY’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program (WASH)
● Regular meeting with the children collective members
● Tracking adolescents with anemia for rehabilitation
● Awareness generation against child marriage

Growing Hope: Dharmsheela Devi’s Journey to a Healthier Life

Dharmsheela Devi lived in a small village. Her husband, Lalan Sahni, worked as a laborer to make ends meet. They have four children and live in a small house.

Despite their difficult circumstances, Dharmsheela was a woman of determination and courage. She was always looking for ways to improve her family’s life and that of the people in her community. She had been associated with CRY, and worked on various health-related issues in around 20 villages. She regularly attended meetings conducted by CHARDS, where she gained knowledge on various health-related issues.

One day, during one of these meetings, she learned about the benefits of having a kitchen garden. She found out that a small patch of land adjacent to her house was lying vacant, and she decided to use it to grow vegetables for her family. With the help of a health worker from the team, she learned how to make a kitchen garden and started growing vegetables such as okra, brinjal, bitter gourd, gourds, and green leafy vegetables.

The vegetables from her garden proved to be beneficial for her family’s health. She no longer had to buy vegetables from the market, and she felt proud of the fact that she was using organic fertilizer in her garden. Her kitchen garden inspired many others to start their own, and soon, there were several kitchen gardens in the village.

Dharmsheela was grateful to the health worker from the project team, who had taught her the benefits of having a kitchen garden. She said, “Today, the kitchen garden has proved useful for me and my family. We use the vegetables grown in our garden, and they are tasty as well as beneficial for our health. I am glad that my garden inspired others in the village to start their own. We are all using organic fertilizer, which makes our vegetables healthier.”

Dharmsheela’s story is a reminder that determination and hard work can make a difference, even in the face of adversity. By taking small steps like starting a kitchen garden, she was able to improve the health and wellbeing of her family and the people in her community.
