Project Ananya Education & Empowerment Trust (AEET)

Campaign Story

About the project

Malnutrition and anemia are critical health concerns in the urban slums of Bangalore, affecting children, adolescent girls, and pregnant women. Limited access to nutritious food, inadequate healthcare, and deep-rooted societal norms contribute to poor health outcomes. Many children suffer from undernutrition, while adolescent girls and expectant mothers face high risks of anemia due to early marriages and lack of proper care. CRY America aims to bridge these gaps by improving access to healthcare, promoting nutritional awareness, and ensuring better hygiene practices, empowering communities to build a healthier future for their women and children.

Making a difference

CRY America Project AEET has been working to improve access to healthcare and hygiene facilities across eight slums in Bangalore. The project focuses on reducing malnutrition and undernutrition among children aged 6–36 months and pregnant women. It also aims to combat severe illnesses such as anemia by strengthening Anganwadi Centres and supporting frontline health workers.

The Way Forward

● Ensure 217 mothers of children aged 0–36 months attend Urban Health and Nutrition Day sessions.
● Facilitate the transition of 26 SUW children to MUW, and from MUW to full recovery.
● Ensure complete immunization of 95 children aged 0–1 year.
● Conduct haemoglobin testing and follow-up sessions for 100 adolescent girls.
● Conduct nutrition counselling and follow-up sessions with 120 pregnant women on adequate dietary intake.
● Reach 130 pregnant and lactating mothers, and ensure at least 95 pregnant women are registered with Anganwadi Centres to access antenatal check-ups and institutional deliveries.
● Ensure participation of 390 children aged 10–18 years from collectives in Life Skills Education modules.
● Train at least 100 parents through Parent Modules.
● Enable the Children Resource Center to support 100 children aged 10–18 years with learning materials, digital resources, and life skills content, and provide educational support to 50 vulnerable children.
● Facilitate the Child Activity Center in engaging 390 children from collectives through Life Skills sessions and interactive activities.

Subhadra’s path to recovery

Subhadra*, a 3 year old girl, was Severely Underweight at just 10 kg, her condition shaped by poverty and limited awareness around nutrition. Recognizing the urgency, she was referred to a Nutrition Rehabilitation Center for specialized care.

To ensure that financial constraints did not stand in the way of her treatment, the team arranged transportation and accompanied the family throughout the process. Frontline health workers initiated her treatment while gently counselling her parents on the importance of proper nutrition. They also conducted food demonstration sessions, helping the family understand how to prepare balanced, nourishing meals with available resources. The team closely monitored Subhadra’s progress, ensuring that her meals and medications were taken regularly and on time. With consistent care, support, and follow-up over two months, Subhadra’s weight improved from 10 kg to 12 kg, moving her from the Severely Underweight to the Moderately Underweight category.

Today, her family is more aware and confident in caring for her needs. They are ensuring timely vaccinations and nutritious meals, and with continued support, they are steadily working towards her full recovery.
